Abstract
A clinical study of nontuberculous empyema was done over 72 cases which had been diagnosed and treated from January, 1956 through May, 1963 at Severance Hospital, Yonsei University, College of Medicine. Attention was placed on incidence, bacteriology, sensitivity of organim for the antibiotics, and treatment of empyema.
Nearly half of the cases were fell on the infancy and childhood, and male was affectedt twice as much as female.
Bacteriology showed 35 cases of staphylococcal infection(48.6%), staphylococcal infection being more prominent in children . Remainder of cases of empyema caused by various organisms were more frequently seen in adults. Recently there developed many antibiotic resistant strain, and in this series 8 cases(11.1%) of bacillus infection was seen. Such a trend of bacterial distribution was not seen before the advent of antibiotic, and this must be a interesting problem to be studied further.
According to the sensitivity test broad-spectrum antibiotic was drug of choice for the treatment of the empyema, and now almost all cases seemed to develop resistance to the penicillin. Here we presented a device of treatment of empyema with massive dose of penicillin.
The mortality rae was 2 cases (2.8%) in this series.
